Having grown up on the east coast, pizza to me has always been defined as 'New York' style pizza: thin chewy crust with sweet sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese fired in a wood-burning oven. I've had a tough time finding authentic 'New York' style pizza here on the Central Coast, so when I heard the name 'Sam's Giant Manhattan Pizza' a little glimmer of hope arose.
We called in an order for a large pie with salami, sausage, mushrooms and black olives, and were told it would take a quick 15 minutes. Upon arrival, Sam had our pizza hot and ready and rang us up with an air of classic New York attitude (love that!).
The pizza smelled great in the VW on the way home, and when we opened the box it looked great.
Overall this was a decent pizza, the crust was chewy (could have been a little saltier), the sauce was sweet, and the toppings were good (except for the canned-looking mushrooms since someone forgot to ask for FRESH mushrooms - hehe). Not the exact pizza potion from my past, but a solid pie. Some fresh, sliced mozzarella cheese and a wood-fired oven would have sealed the deal.
Prices may be bit high, but what do you expect for a pizza joint with a Pismo Beach zip code?
